Understanding Your Community

Genesiv provides a chatroom-style community experience for your community members. Community members can hold conversations, react to messages, level up with gamification, choose badges to display beside their names, message other members, and more.

This article aims to walk through the basic functions of a Genesiv community and introduce how members can interact in it, as well as the activities they can engage in.

To achieve this, we will be breaking down each section shown below, explaining its functionality and the role it plays in your community.

1. Channel, Category & User Sidebar

Genesiv employs a chatroom-style community that allows different conversations to happen in various individual chatrooms called 'channels'. In these channels, community members can participate in text, video and audio conversations depending on the channel type. You can learn more about channel types here.

Channels Tab

In the channel tab on the sidebar, you will be able to toggle between different channels, expand and close categories, and search for specific channels using the search bar.

Users Tab

Toggling over to the user tab will allow you to view a list of all users in your community.

Clicking on members in the user list will bring up their user profile, as well as the respective roles they have. If members are given access to direct messaging, they will also have the option to directly message these users and start a 1 on 1 conversation with them.

Administrators will also be able to right-click on each user to carry out community moderation when necessary.

2. Chatroom Window

The chatroom window is where all your community conversations take place! The chatroom window may look different depending on the channel type of the channel you have selected. Here, members will be able to interact with one another through messages, images, gifs, multimedia and more!

Messages and Text Formatting

Messages can be sent by typing the desired text in the textbox below. Highlighting typed text reveals the following formatting options that give your text some flair.

These are Genesiv's formatting options in order (left to right):

  1. Bold: Bolds selected parts of text
  2. Italics: Italicizes select parts of text
  3. Strikethrough: Strikes through selected parts of text
  4. Block Quotes: Transform selected text into a blocked quotation to distinguish it from the rest of the content.
  5. Code Blocks: Convert selected text into a code block to present programming code or snippets.
  6. Invisible Text: This option renders selected text unreadable in the chatroom unless it is highlighted.
  7. Hyperlink: Transform selected text into a hyperlink by providing your desired URL.

In addition to sending text messages, you can also send gifs, emojis, and even multimedia content by dragging and dropping it into your chatroom.

Message Actions

Messages sent in chatrooms can also be moused over to reveal a set of options that allow you to perform additional actions.

Members will be able to perform the following actions on all messages in the chatroom:

  • React: Express reactions to the message by selecting an appropriate emoji
  • Share: Quote the message and post it to other community channels with an accompanying comment
  • Reply: Reply to the message with your own message
  • Broadcast Messages (requires role permissions): Choose a message and broadcast it to multiple selected channels simultaneously.

Furthermore, members will have specific actions available for the messages they have sent:

  • Delete: Remove their own message from the chatroom.
  • Edit: Modify the content of their message after it has been sent

In addition, Community Owners and Administrators will also be able to:

  • Pin: Pin a selected message to the top of the channel for increased visibility.
  • Delete: Delete any and all messages from chatrooms

3. User Bar

The user bar serves as a central hub for individual members to customize their personal preferences and access important features such as notifications and profiles.

Within the user bar, you will find three interactive icons arranged from left to right:

  • Language: Select your preferred default language for displaying the app. If AI Translations are enabled for the community, members can also configure their desired translation destination language.
  • Direct Message: Conveniently access all existing direct messages you have with other users.
  • Notifications: Access a consolidated view of community notifications, both at the channel level and on an individual level.

Your profile picture is located on the top right corner. Clicking on it will grant access to your user settings. Within the user settings, you will have the ability to make various changes to your profile, such as updating social links and display names. Additionally, you can add a payment method, change your password, and manage notification settings according to your preferences.

4. Header Bar

The header bar is where community information is displayed. The header bar contains the Community name, logo, icon, as well as a progress bar for Gamification (if the community has Gamification turned on). If you're a Community Owner, you'll be able to choose what appears on the Header Bar by configuring it in your appearence settings.

The header bar also features a hamburger menu, which can be expanded to reveal the following options:

  • Leaderboard: Opens the Community Leaderboards, providing insights into member rankings and achievements. The Leaderboards can also be accessed by clicking on the Progress Bar.
  • Badges: Opens the Badge Management page, enabling members to choose and display badges, as well as apply for new ones.
  • Appearance: Allows members to select their preferred display mode for the Community, offering a choice between Light mode and Dark mode.
  • Invite Others: Provides each member with a unique invite link, facilitating the invitation of others to join the Community.
  • Leave Community: Offers the option to leave the current Community.

These options, accessible through the hamburger menu, allow members to further personalize their Community experience and engage in various actions.

5. Banner

Banners are a way to display messages and announcements front and centre in your Community. Different Banners can be configured to appear in different channels and to different groups of members. Their appearance and positioning in your community can also be fully customized.
